Variety confirms that Matthew Vaughn has closed deal to helm Marvel Studios' superhero flick "Thor."

AceShowbiz - Confirmation has been made by Variety just now that Matthew Vaughn is indeed set to take the director's chair in "Thor", Marvel Studios' big screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' superhero character.

Deal for Vaughn is said to close just as Paramount releases his latest directorial effort "Stardust" today, August 10, 2007. For the British filmmaker, the project will be his second effort at a superhero flick after previously got attached to direct "X-Men: The Last Stand" which he left due to personal reasons.

Marvel reportedly is eyeing for a pre-strike production start this winter with Mark Protosevich penning the script and Avi Arad serving as producer. Protosevich, a native of Chicago, Illinois, is known to be the screenwriter for 2000's "The Cell" also 2006's "Poseidon" and most recently wrote the screenplay of "I Am Legend" for Warner Bros. Pictures.

Meanwhile, pic's story will likely to center on the origin of the titular character, a blonde-tressed, hammer-wielding hero who is sent to Earth to protect mankind. Creator Stan Lee described the character's genesis as following the creation of the Hulk: "I thought it would be fun to invent someone as powerful as, or perhaps even more powerful than, the Incredible Hulk. But how do you make someone stronger than the strongest human? It finally came to me: Don't make him human - make him a god."
