Bourne Topples Simpsons Down on Box Office Fight

Spy flick "The Bourne Ultimatum" forces animated "The Simpsons Movie" to go one step down to number two on the weekend domestic box office running August 3-5, 2007.

AceShowbiz - The deadly, quick-thinking former CIA assassin Jason Bourne has returned to impress all of us once again through his latest big screen adventure "The Bourne Ultimatum."

The third chapter of the highly-skilled spy series, the picture really hits high this time, making a $69.3 million debut to beat "The Simpsons Movie" as the champion on the weekend North American box office ended Sunday, August 5, 2007 while scoring the biggest August opening of a film ever.

The amazing number the Universal Pictures release has pulled is way far above that collected by the animated big screen version of the long-running TV shows for the latter just managed to score a good $25.1 million, which is a 66.1 percent drop from the fantastic $74 million it scooped the week before.

Coming as the third-rank holder is another newcomer "Underdog" with $11.6 million followed by comedic flick "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry" and summer blockbuster "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" to make up the top five of the chart, the former bringing in $10.6 million while the latter adding $9.5 million to raise its total gross to $261 million.

Positively-reviewed musical fare "Hairspray" trailed close behind on the sixth place after making its way to take in $9.2 million, a rather large tally compared to the fair $6.6 million "No Reservations" has secured. Next positions up to number ten go to "Transformers" and two other new releases, "Hot Rod" and "Bratz: The Movie", with respective income of $6 million, $5.3 million, and $4.2 million.
