Dispute Raises Over
Movie

Altered coins featuring Silver Surfer of the upcoming "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" have received disapproval from the U.S. Mint.

AceShowbiz - Intending to create an unusual marketing on its upcoming superhero flick "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer", 20th Century Fox ends up causing a stir instead.

The company has collaborated with private corporation Franklin Mint to alter 40,000 U.S. quarters to feature an image of the Silver Surfer on the tails side, but the action in turn did not please the U.S. Mint as the government agent learned about it last week. The latter even considered that the studio and the Franklin Mint were breaking the law since it is illegal to turn a coin into an advertising vehicle.

"The promotion is in no way approved, authorized, endorsed, or sponsored by the United States Mint, nor is it in any way associated or affiliated with the United States Mint," stated a press release from the federal mint.

Though so, the Mint did not point out whether Fox or Franklin Mint would face a penalty for the promotion. The coins were supposed to be in circulation throughout the country by the end of Memorial Day weekend with fans who find the quarters being encouraged to enter a contest online to win prizes and a private screening of the movie.

In its response to this matter, Fox, through its spokesman Chris Petrikin, remarked that neither the studio nor the Franklin Mint had any intention to violate any laws or "suggest that there was any approval from the U.S. Mint or the U.S. Government" for the altered quarters.

"These are commemorative coins like many the Franklin Mint creates on a regular basis for various properties," the man said. "We were confident this coin followed the same procedures and guidelines but will certainly take any necessary steps if advised otherwise."
