Avril Lavigne Receives Critique on Multilingual "Girlfriend"

April 14, 2007, 4:12 am GMT

Avril Lavinge did her non English versions of "Girlfriend" the wrong way according to language experts.

If many singers do their singles in bilingual records, Avril Lavigne goes multi. For the single "Girlfriend", the 22 years old singer did it in Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese and Mandarin.

While some criticized her poor accents, some even condemned her grammar mistakes. Johnny Degliuomini, gives an insight to her Italian version. He said, "…And then she says, "I will be your girlfriend." "Saṛ tua" means "I will be" instead of "I could be." She couldn't directly translate it because of the tense of the verb. It takes way too long and doesn't fall right."

Even being a French descendant can't help her to get it right in the French verse. People are questioning why she can't keep pronouncing 'copine', the French for 'girlfriend' the right way.

"Girlfriend" is obviously a bold change of direction for Avril. Some said that it is too similar to Toni Basil's "Mickey" and some prefer her usual darker materials. To make the matter worse, the song was also edited in several radio stations due to explicit lyrics.

On the brighter side, the single is still included as one of Avril's most successful singles. It peaked at top 10 in more than 12 countries and is also featured in video game "Burnout Dominator"
