R-rated Mayan drama "Apocalypto" debuts high at the top slot of the chart with $15 million.

AceShowbiz - This could be another perfect example that controversial work always gets most attention from public no matter what dispute it has caused. Following the success of "Borat", it's now "Apocalypto" turn to gloat as the R-rated Mayan drama satisfyingly scores $15 million worth of tickets to snatch the top spot on the weekend box office ended Sunday, December 10, 2006.
Despite the stir it has ignited, particularly among the descendants of Mayan tribe as reported before, the blood-soaked picture triumphantly pushes down last-week top holder "Happy Feet" to the second place after the animated flick turns out to only add up another $12.9 million into its pocket.
On the third rank seats newcomer "The Holiday" which averaged $5,172 at 2,610 sites to gather $12.7 million followed by "Casino Royale" with $8.9 million. "Blood Diamond" and "Deja Vu" come next to secure the two ranks behind, the former resting on the fifth collecting $8.6 million while the latter on the sixth pulling $6 million.
Rounding out the top ten of the list placed in order are Warner Bros.' comedy feature "Unaccompanied Minors" with $5.8 million, New Line Cinema's "The Nativity Story" with $5.7 million, 20th Century Fox's family comedy "Deck the Halls" with $3.9 million, and Walt Disney Pictures' "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" with $3.2 million.
