"Borat" Called Film of the Year By Kazakh Paper

Amidst all the negative response and reactions directed toward "" in recent week, a good publication has delightfully come to the surface from a leading newspaper in the real Kazakhstan which is known to be liberal but usually loyal to the country's leadership.

The paper, a weekly tabloid named Karavan, was reported to have dubbed the mockumentary the "best film of the year" yesterday, November 17, stepping into the fray after sending a correspondent in Vienna to watch the movie.

"Cultural Learnings is certainly not an anti-Kazakh, anti-Romanian or anti-Semitic ... It is a cruelly anti-American movie," the paper said. "It is amazingly funny and sad at the same time."

"Borat", which tells about the title character's journey from his homeland Kazakhstan to the U.S, previously angered the Kazakh government for spreading bad image on the country abroad, and even was threatened with "legal measures" last year. Though the government later softened its stance and did not issue a ban to the film, 20th Century Fox's distribution subsidiary in the region, Gemini Films, has agreed not to show it there.
