"The Covenant" emerges with $9 million to replace "Invincible" on the top rank of U.S box office of the weekend ended September 10, 2006.

AceShowbiz - The spell has been cast and it works well enough for "The Covenant" this time. Presenting interesting basic premise of supernatural teens at an elite boarding school, the movie delightfully works its way to conjure up $9 million to secure the top position on the weekend box-office, according to studio estimates Sunday, September 10, 2006.
Though indeed creates winning mark on the list, the Sony/Screen Gems-distributed picture turns out to gather the lowest total for a number one big screen feature in three years, only scoring a $3,357 average at 2,681 sites. Meanwhile, the second place goes to Focus Features' "Hollywoodland" as the film managed to collect $6 million, way up behind the last-week chart topper "Invincible" which fell down to number three for merely earning $5.7 million this weekend.
Another newcomer, a dubbed Asian import released by the Weinstein Company under the title of "The Protector", comes up next to take the fourth spot after its decent effort to gain $5 million followed by "Crank" with $4.8 million. Trailing close behind this Lions Gate production is Edward Norton's latest vehicle of "The Illusionist" which drew in an averaged number of $3,406 at 1,362 locations to thereby add another $4.6 million to its sixth-place feedbag.
Lining up in order to make up the top ten box office of this weekend are "Little Miss Sunshine" with $4.4 million, "The Wicker Man" with $4.1 million, "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" with $3 million, and Paramount Pictures' animated flick "Barnyard" with $2.5 million.
